The Haunted Hotel Project- Liverpool.

This room is not a room.

It’s a trap. A cage.

The woman at reception told me I was in room 140.

There were so many corridors to navigate, until I finally found it.

This room.

                                                                                                You can’t leave.

You can hear the footfalls of the man cloaked in smoke.

                                        Walking the halls.

He carries a hammer.

                                                                         His women have razor teeth.

If you try to leave he will see.

Look the doors.

                                                                         Don’t switch on the TV.

                                                                         140 doesn’t exist.

It’s a cage.

An innocuous hell.

The Haunted Hotel Project-Wales- 2012.

I saw them the first night; their naked bodies standing on the beach.

They were bathed in moonlight.

Some are black and grey, the colour of sea rocks.

They are covered in lichen and armoured in barnacles.

Their milky eyes look up to my room.

I should be scared, but I know I will be joining them soon.

I can hear them singing to me under the soughing of the sea.

I woke up, it was late.

I rolled over and checked my phone, and in the ghost light, I saw myself.

Except, I was sitting up.

The other me told me that the woman lying next to me wasn’t my wife.

He said that my real wife was trapped behind the mirror.

He said, the only way to free her was to kill the woman sleeping next to me.

I was wrong to do that.

She is not my real wife.

There’s a blood moon on the ridge.

It’s not a door to the next room- it’s a gateway.

A place where the man who spreads like fire comes from.

His eyes, like flames, cast moving shadows.

He bends people to his will.

I didn’t mean to do it, he is inside me.

Manifesting, like some burning tumor.

That’s why I wait out here now.

Waiting for a blood moon on the ridge.

The Haunted Hotel Project- San Francisco

I saw my name in the elevator.

It’s not a registry of the living on the elevator walls, it’s a registry of the dead.

I can feel the pull of this place.

It’s like a tide.

The people here are all dead.

They move behind the mirrors.

I hear them at night; a low moan just below the noise of the AC.

The banging on the walls is them pushing into this world.

Your world.

#Redditwriters Anthology, Update One

Hello all,

It’s been a good couple of weeks since the anthology was announced, so I thought I would post an update.

A big thank you to everyone who has submitted so far, and if you haven’t yet, remember that we need as many as we can for this thing work. (Sep 17th!)

The awesome team of editors and I have been busy devising how we are going to manage the submissions and editing process, and I wanted to share that with you.

So, once a piece is received:

  • I will check the formatting and assign it to the genre editor.
  • The genre editor will review and edit the piece. If necessary, they will contact with author and make any suggestions/improvements that they feel need to be made to get the submission into the best shape possible.
  • Once the editor is happy with the piece, they’ll score it and mark it on our submissions spreadsheet.
  • The score is the editor’s personal opinion on the piece, it’ll just help us curate the anthology and use the strongest pieces we can for the collection.
  • We’ll take the highest scoring ones and pull them into the shortlist.
  • Another editor will then be assigned to have a read through and give a second score. The scores are added together and the top scoring of those are in the collection!

We are looking to make the collection around 60k words, which is about 40, 1500 word entries. Depending on the amount of submissions we get in, we aim to get the long list together by the mid-late October. Final scoring and drawing up of accepted submissions will be done by mid-November with a view to getting the finished product out by early December. Woo hoo.

Charity News

The votes came in and you guys voted on Doctors Without Borders, so we will be going with them. Thank you to @mrdanalvarez who has started to look into how we set it up. I’ll post a proper update on that as soon as everything is confirmed.

Here is the website if you want to have a look at the amazing work they do

There were a couple of suggestions of encouraging arts based charities, and if this collection is successful and doesn’t turn my hair grey, then we should absolutely go with that next time.

I hope that is okay with everyone.

Naming the Collection

@mrdanalvarez also ran a poll as to what the title of the collection might be and has collected some of the suggestions here, I’m voting for my own suggested title, TL;DR: An Anthology.

I’d like to give huge thanks to the genre editors @selfpluspen, @jivanward, @AizelleRaine, @camdenmcollins, and @ADHamilton91 for helping me work the details of the process out.

Thanks, and have an awesome weekend from the #redditwriters, anthology team!

Reddit Writers Anthology

Okay, so a couple of days ago @davidjsand created the redditwriters hashtag, and man, what a genius idea! My twitter feed has never been so alive with activity. It’s so awesome to see so many people connecting. I really hope it continues.

I mentioned that maybe we should do a collection of #redditwriters short stories and the idea gained traction quite quickly.  Now here I am looking at the very real possibility of managing a collection from you guys. It’s quite an exciting and scary prospect.

Whilst I am excited, I am also really busy with work/life and my own writing projects. So, if it is going to happen I am going to need some help from you guys. Also, I have never managed a project on this type of scale before.

Submission rules

So, this is how I am proposing it should work:

Initially, let’s get this one published on an e-platform. I only know Amazon’s platform, so we can go with that. If anyone has any other suggestions for a different platform, let me know, and be aware that I will need help getting it on there!

No specified genre or theme. You guys wanted to submit your own stuff and I am down with that idea. So, for it to make any kind of sense we will order it by genre. Thanks @ADHamilton91 for the idea, I think it’s a great one.

However, to make this feasible given the amount of people who have shown interest, we need to limit word count to 1500 words. Limited to a maximum of two submissions.

So, when you submit, it would be super useful if you could include the following information:

  • Reddit/Twitter handle
  • Name (if you want to submit it)
  • Name of the piece
  • Genre
  • Word count
  • Are you happy to have your Twitter handle published?
  • Are you happy to have your name published?

Try and submit your work according to the Chicago style guide if possible. If not just remember to

  • double space,
  • Indent after first line,
  • size 12 font,
  • Calibri or Arial.

Please note that all work submitted in Comic Sans will be sacrificed to the demon, Eligos, and your soul will be forfeit.

If you want to submit more than one piece for different genres, tell me your preference, but remember that we need to balance the genres as evenly as possible.

Send your submissions to the newly created

Let’s go for a submissions deadline of 17 September 2017. That will give everyone the chance to get something together. If we then aim for an early November release date.

Editing/quality control

No pressure, but submit your best effort and be open to suggestions and edits! I’d love for this to go somewhere and I want you to be happy with what is published. I am happy to edit as long as you are happy to read suggestions from me/anyone else and make changes. It should be a collaborative effort.

I am proposing that each genre has a primary editor, (volunteers please!) who will read through the submission, makes some suggestions/edits/ formats and liaises with the author, and I will manage final edits/ style. I am happy to manage the Sci-Fi genre! Thanks @pubby88 for the suggestion on a panel of editors.

There was also another great suggestion by @cookfiction that we do this for charity and I am absolutely down for that.

I’m open for ideas on what charity we should go with, but I am thinking given that funding has been cut across the board for planned parenthood, that we donate anything we make from this to Planned Parenthood Texas,

I’m not from Texas, but it feels right.

(Edit! After some thought and conversation, I am going to put this to poll with a couple of different options! Thanks for your ideas.)

Let me know what you guys think. If there are other ideas I will put it to a poll on Twitter and we’ll go with the majority.

I’ll need to look into how we go about setting it up with the charity so that the funds go directly to them and not through me.

In Reddit parlance, TLDR; Submissions= no genre/theme, 1500 words soft limit. Deadline for up to two submissions is, 17 September 2017. This is for charity. I love you guys.

Next steps

I need volunteers to take on editing duties for the different genres- Big thanks to @selfpluspen for volunteering for editing already.

  • Sci-Fi/ Dystopian: Me
  • Fantasy: Filled
  • Romance (supernatural or otherwise):
  • Horror: filled.
  • Crime: filled
  • YA:
  • Other (literary/contemporary): filled.

If you are interested in helping out with the editing, email me at and we’ll chat. I think we may have to do this on a first come first serve basis.

I also need you guys to tell me what charity you want if you don’t like my idea. Do it on the twitter post linking to this blog post, so we can have an open debate, and as I said, if it differs from mine, we will just do a poll.

Finally, I need your writing. I am super excited to be a part of this project and hopefully with a good number of us on board, we can do something amazing.

PS, Apologies if I missed thanking anyone I should have. I am throwing this together as fast as I can to keep the momentum.

The woman clothed in alabaster skin comes in the dark.

Her black fingers quiver as she shiver-shakes from the bathroom.

My queen wears a crown of wounds under her white hair.

She notices me.

If you turn the light off, she will come shortly after midnight. With the window flung open, so that she is bathed in moonlight.

I pray she comes close and lays her dark hands on me.

I want to feel the dead mouth, to receive the kiss of the grave.

I wish to be her host.
